What We're Looking For:
Michael Baker International is seeking a Transportation Planner/Engineer (“Plangineer”) based in Carlsbad, CA, to support and lead traffic and transportation projects across public and private sectors. This role collaborates closely with multidisciplinary teams across Southern California, working with planners, traffic engineers, and project managers to develop transportation plans, perform data analysis and modeling, and support multimodal, corridor, and safety studies.
This position follows a hybrid schedule, with a minimum of two days per week onsite in the Carlsbad office.
What You'll Do:
Prepare transportation planning documents and technical analyses, including traffic operations, TIA, and VMT studies
Analyze multimodal data sets and perform modeling, simulation, and signal optimization using industry-standard tools
Support corridor, safety, long-range, and environmental planning studies
Conduct field evaluations and ensure compliance with applicable local, state, and federal requirements
Participate in client meetings, technical working groups, and stakeholder presentations
Mentor junior staff and provide technical oversight and QA/QC
Support proposal development and business growth efforts in Southern California
What You Need to Succeed:
Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a related field
8+ years of experience in transportation planning, traffic operations, and VMT analysis
Proficiency with transportation modeling tools (e.g., HCS, Synchro, SimTraffic, VISSIM, SIDRA, or similar)
Experience working with emerging mobility and probe data sources (e.g., StreetLight, Replica, connected vehicle data)
Strong analytical, communication, and collaboration skills
Ability to work independently and across multidisciplinary teams
PE, TE, or PTOE certification strongly preferred
Compensation:
The approximate compensation range for this position is 90,000-120,000 per year. This compensation range is a good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting. Actual compensation is dependent upon factors such as education, qualifications, experience, skillset, and physical work location.

What We're Looking For:
You’ll be hands‑on with a variety of public works and transportation projects throughout Southern California, including roadway and intersection improvements, ADA and accessibility upgrades, active transportation (bike and pedestrian), signing & striping, traffic signals, street lighting, and other local agency improvement projects. This position is ideal for engineers who enjoy technical design work, collaboration, and growing into greater responsibility.
Prepare preliminary and final engineering plans using AutoCAD (Civil 3D exposure a plus)
Develop plan and specification packages from design criteria, sketches, and detailed drawings
Work closely with project managers, engineers, and design technicians to support coordinated designs
Apply engineering standards, technical manuals, and best practices to meet client expectations
Review shop drawings for accuracy and compliance
Assist with project schedules, budgets, scopes of work, and proposals
Gain exposure to task management responsibilities on select projects
Continue building your skills through training, mentorship, and professional development
Please note this is NOT a remote role and will require in office time up to 3 days per week in Carlsbad, CA
What You'll Do:
Prepare preliminary and final engineering plans using AutoCAD (and Civil 3D where applicable)
Develop plan and specification packages from criteria, sketches, and detailed drawings
Collaborate with engineers, project managers, and design technicians to deliver high‑quality work
Apply engineering standards, technical manuals, and design principles to meet client expectations
Review shop drawings for conformance with contract documents
Support project schedules, budgets, scopes of work, and proposals
Contribute to marketing initiatives and business development efforts
Serve as a task manager on select projects, owning deliverables from start to finish
Continue growing your technical expertise through training, seminars, and professional development
What You Need to Succeed:
Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering
California Professional Engineer (P.E.) license – required
5–10 years of experience preparing engineering drawings and designs
Proficiency in AutoCAD (Civil 3D experience strongly preferred)Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office
A collaborative mindset and interest in working on a variety of public‑sector projects
Compensation:
The approximate compensation range for this position is 100,000 - $130,000 per year. This compensation range is a good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting. Actual compensation is dependent upon factors such as education, qualifications, experience, skillset, and physical work location.
